Moral Development
What are morals?
Morals are codes of conduct based on what is right or wrong.
Piaget’s moral development theory.
1. heteronomous morality - For children between the age of 6 and 10. Adhere the rules created by others. Morality of a decision is based on consequence.
2. Autonomous morality – (ages 10 – adults). Rules understood but questioned at times. Intent of the person rather than consequene determines the morality.
Kohlberg’s 6 Stages of Moral Development
Level Stage
Pre conventional - 1. Fear and punishment
2. Hope for reward.
Conventional - 3. Peer approval
4. Adhere to law and order.
Post conventional - 5. Social Contact
6. Universal ethics.
